Seasonal Disorder Light Therapy

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that is linked to a lack of sunlight and can be devastating for sufferers. Light therapy, or phototherapy, is a common treatment that has been used for more than 20 years.

The head of the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Michael Terman, says bright light therapy is considered a potent, non-pharmaceutical treatment by physicians and clinicians.

More than half a million people in the United States alone suffer from seasonal affective disorder. It’s believed SAD may be caused by a genetic response to sunlight, an individual’s circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, and melatonin production being disrupted by a lack of sunlight.
