Those of you who have travelled are probably quite familiar with the search for the perfect hideaway. For some this could be the most beautiful hillside village that perfectly embodies a place of relaxation, while for others it is the trendiest club downtown in one of the coolest capital cities. For most, however, this is the perfect beach: the whitest sand you can imagine combined with the clearest turquoise of the sea, a few palm trees, a hammock, a beer and the key ingredient? A secret.
This idea is perfectly embodied in Alex Garland’s debut book The Beach (you may have caught Danny Boyle’s poor film adaption featuring Leonardo DiCaprio running around in tattered shorts). It is the tale of travellers, searching for their nirvana amongst the spoilt beaches of Thailand. Forty years ago these undeveloped islands were just being discovered by the hippies who had floated east of India and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, what were once a travellers' dream are now becoming more like concrete jungles and Ibizas of the South East, with a few more lady boys thrown in.
Of course amongst all this, there are quieter spots. Luxury resorts often have private beaches and even the party island of Kho Phangan has a few lesser-known coves, but they lack seclusion. Organised tours visit the beaches so the tourists can play a few games of Frisbee on some lesser-trodden sand before moving on. They may be the perfect place to spend a few hungover days, recuperating between the many moon themed parties that go on, but it’s not the paradise we seek.
