Whether it be the dramatic coastline of Pembrokeshire or the peaceful solitude of Carmarthenshire’s undulating countryside, South West Wales has long been a popular destination for city dwellers looking to swap the pressures of modern life for this untamed region, proud of its Celtic traditions and customs. Here are four personal favourite retreats to get away from it all.
Aberaeron and the Harbourmaster Hotel
Often described as the jewel of the Welsh coast, situated between Aberystwyth and Lampeter, Aberaeron was one of Wales’s first planned towns, built by Reverend Alban Thomas Jones in 1805. Over two hundred years later, its locals still take huge pride in maintaining this small fishing town, complete with colourful Regency houses overlooking fishermens’ boats docked in its harbour.
However, Aberaeron is perhaps most famous for its gastronomy, in particular the Harbourmaster Hotel which aside from garnering national praise from food critics, was recently visited by Matthew Rhys and Sienna Miller whilst filming the Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge of Love. Whether it be its hearty breakfasts, fresh sea dishes (try the Cardigan Bay Crab) caught by local fishermen or just a light tapas selection at the bar, dining in this Grade II listed building can be pricy but worth every morsel. If you are planning to make a night of it, the hotel has ten plush en-suite rooms with stunning panoramic views over the Cardigan Bay, although reservations need to be made well in advance with rooms costing £190 per night.
