Students should have access to encyclopedias for more reasons that just mere research; one of the fun parts of learning through discovery is flipping through the pages of an encyclopedia and stumbling on unusual pictures or words. Wikipedia recreates this experience to an extent with the "Today's Featured Article" section. Reference books and Bibles are tricky to read on ereaders because they are not books that are read page by page, but ebook readers can imitate an encyclopedia adventure by directing the ereader to go to a random page. Google Books has public domain ebooks, including free encyclopedias that can be downloaded as pdf.

Reading the earliest copies of The World Book: Organized Knowledge in Story and Picture is fun. The emblem of The World Book Encyclopedia series has changed, but still has the recognizable lines circling the globe. The 1918 edition was published by Hanson-Bellows Publishing Company, and it was digitized from Google Books from a copy found at the University of Michigan. Some of the pages include photos of a Google employee's gloved fingers as the pages are digitized.
